Folding or sliding? A guide to choosing a glass balcony system
Can’t decide between a folding and a sliding glass balcony? We compared both systems by opening width, cleaning, insulation, budget and balcony size, and added the threshold-free and double-glazed options.

The most common dilemma we hear when people choose a glass balcony is folding versus sliding. Both protect the balcony from wind, rain and dust, but they behave differently in daily use, cleaning and budget. In this guide we put the two systems side by side and explain when each one makes more sense.
How does a folding glass balcony work?
In a folding glass balcony the panes run on rollers in top and bottom rails and, when they reach one end, pivot on their own axis and stack at the side. This way almost the entire balcony can be opened. It is the most popular choice for people who want to use the balcony as a fully open terrace in summer.
Strengths:
- When opened, most of the balcony width is free.
- Panes fold inwards, so the outer surface can be cleaned from inside.
- Few profiles mean an uninterrupted view.
- Double-glazed and threshold-free versions are available.
How does a sliding glass balcony work?
In a sliding glass balcony the panes slide in front of each other on parallel rails. Because the panes don't pivot, the mechanism is simpler. When opened the panes overlap, so part of the balcony always remains covered by glass.
Strengths:
- Easy to use, opens in one movement.
- The simple mechanism needs little maintenance.
- The initial cost is usually lower.
- The sealed sash design gives good weather-tightness.
Side-by-side comparison
| Criterion | Folding system | Sliding system | |---|---|---| | Opening | Almost fully opens | About half opens, depending on the number of sashes | | Use | Panes are slid and folded one by one | Sashes slide, one movement | | Cleaning the outside | Easy from inside | Done by moving the sashes | | Insulation | High with the double-glazed option | Good with sealed sashes | | Profile look | Slim, few profiles | More visible frame | | Best for | Wide, straight balconies and terraces | Narrow balconies, heavily used spaces | | Starting price | from 4,500 TL/m² | from 3,800 TL/m² |
Prices are starting values including VAT. For details see our guide Glass balcony prices 2026.
Which one, when?
Choose a folding system if…
- you want to open the balcony completely in summer,
- your view matters and you want to see as little profile as possible,
- your balcony is wide, has corners or is close to terrace size,
- you are considering double glazing so you can use the balcony as a sitting room in winter.
Choose a sliding system if…
- you are looking for a budget-first solution,
- the balcony is long and narrow and there is little room to stack panes,
- there are elderly people or children at home and you want the simplest operation,
- you will mostly keep the balcony closed and open it only for ventilation.
Differences in maintenance and lifespan
With regular care, both systems work trouble-free for many years. In a folding system the panes pivot, so there are more hinges and rollers; cleaning the rails once a year and checking the rollers and seals is enough. A sliding system has fewer moving parts, but dust and sand collecting in the rails can make the sashes heavy. In both systems the rails should be cleaned with a vacuum and a damp cloth, not a hard brush. For detailed advice see our article Glass balcony cleaning and maintenance.
Threshold-free and double-glazed options
Besides these two systems, two more options may influence your decision:
- [Threshold-free glass balcony](/en/glass-balcony/threshold-free-glass-balcony): The bottom rail is recessed into the floor or solved with a very slim profile. It gives a level transition between living room and balcony and reduces the risk of tripping. Water drainage must be planned correctly.
- [Double-glazed glass balcony](/en/glass-balcony/double-glazed-glass-balcony): Double glass and insulated profiles make the balcony usable in all four seasons. It reduces the cold-surface feeling in winter and limits condensation.
Guillotine glass systems, which open vertically and are popular for cafés, restaurants and large terraces, are a separate category.
Checklist before you decide
- Measure the width and height of the balcony and note the number of corners.
- Think about which months of the year you will use the balcony and how.
- Ask whether the building management has colour or system rules.
- Have the floor and ceiling checked for level; slopes affect installation.
- Ask for the warranty period and coverage in writing.
