What is a bioclimatic pergola?
A bioclimatic pergola is a shading system whose roof is made of rotating aluminium louvres. The louvre angle is adjusted by a motor: fully open, it shows the sky; half open, it lets hot air escape upwards; closed, it channels rainwater into side gutters and down through the posts. Unlike fabric awnings it is far more resistant to wind and rain.
Advantages
- Sun control: Adjust the shade as you like during the day with the louvre angle.
- Natural ventilation: Louvres left slightly open stop hot air from building up.
- Rain protection: Closed louvres and the integrated gutter system keep the area below dry.
- Automation: Remote control, smartphone app, rain and wind sensor options.
- Expandable: The sides can be closed with guillotine glass systems, folding glass or zip screens to extend the season.
Who is it for?
It suits villa and house gardens, penthouse terraces and café, restaurant and hotel terraces. It is a balanced solution for those who want shade in summer and a rain-protected seating area in spring and autumn without building a fully enclosed winter garden.
What affects the price
The price of a bioclimatic pergola depends on the span and number of posts, wall-mounted or freestanding (four-post) installation, louvre profile thickness, motor and sensor options, integrated LED lighting, heaters and side enclosures. Wide spans may need an intermediate beam, which is decided by a structural assessment at the survey.
Installation
Posts are fixed to the floor with chemical anchors or a concrete base. If the pergola is fixed to a wall, the wall’s load capacity is checked. A typical terrace pergola is installed in two to three days and handed over after motor adjustment and sensor tests.
Maintenance
Clearing leaves from the tops of the louvres and the gutter channels twice a year is enough. Powder-coated aluminium surfaces can be wiped with a damp cloth; avoid abrasive products. In heavy snowfall, setting the louvres vertical reduces the load. Get a free quote for your project, or see our glass roof systems page if you want a fixed glass cover.
